With efficiency ratings of 85% or higher, modern oil-fired boilers are among the most cost-effective ways to heat a home or business. Although known for their reliability, oil-fired boilers do need occasional maintenance and repair.
The key to keeping your oil-fired boiler running well is, first and foremost, making sure it doesn’t run out of fuel. Coming in a close second is a yearly service appointment before winter unleashes its full fury. Routine cleaning and adjustment goes a long way to ensuring your burner keeps your home or business comfortably warm when the weather turns cold.
In years past, the most common problem with oil burners was the flue passage becoming clogged, primarily due to impurities in the fuel. Today, though, cleaner fuels have significantly reduced the need to clean the flue passage every year. However, regular boiler tune ups are necessary to adjust the burner for maximum efficiency. This is something you should have done every year before winter starts.
Avoid problems with your oil-fired boiler and have it tuned up regularly!
If you haven’t had your oil-fired burner tuned up for over a year, schedule an appointment with Hot Point Heating and Cooling to get it ready for the winter ahead. Many problems can be avoided with a yearly tune up appointment. And when you have us do a tune up, we guarantee your burner won’t fail during the current heating season. If it does, we’ll repair it during normal business hours (8am to 6 pm) at a 50% discount.*
*Guarantee applies only if homeowner has followed the recommendations of Hot Point Heating and Air Conditioning for bringing their equipment up to recommended factory specifications. The operational guarantee applies only to the furnace tuned up for the duration of the heating season (Oct 1 – Mar 31). Heat exchangers, compressors, coils and drains are not included.
It’s the cardinal rule of oil-fired burners, and everyone who has an oil-fired burner knows it (Or should know it!). Unfortunately, if you’re not on an automatic delivery plan with an oil company, it can sometimes happen that you let the oil run low. Then, one fateful day, it runs out.
When a burner runs out of fuel, the line gets filled with air and sludge, rendering the burner inoperable. The only fix is to have the air in the line bled out. Although this can be a DIY job, the potential for things to go wrong is pretty high, and the consequences severe. So, it’s not something we’d recommend. Especially when we offer round-the-clock emergency service to get your burner running again.
